Update on Domestic Partner Ordinance

Rights of Domestic Partners Upheld As Miami-Dade County Commission Passes “The Domestic Partners and Family Health Coverage Ordinance”

By an 8 to 4 vote, the Miami-Dade County Commission approved an ordinance that will ensure health insurance and civil rights for all Miami-Dade employees’ domestic partners.

Those Commissioners voting against the ordinance were: Dorrin D.Rolle,  Natacha Seijas., Joe A. Martinez, and  Jose “Pepe” Diaz.

The benefits of this ordinance are enormous for the community:

* County employees would have the ability to provide health insurance for their domestic partner and their dependents.

    * Provides employees with domestic partners medical, sick leave and family leave that apply to employees with spouses.

    * Creates a domestic partner registry that employees of the county, residents, and visitors can use to officially register their domestic partnership.

    * The registry provides for hospital visitation rights at all hospitals in Miami-Dade County.

    * Simply put, the ordinance increases access to healthcare for ALL Miami-Dade County families.

    * Benefits for domestic partners, gay or straight, is good for county employees.

    * Miami-Dade County will finally join neighboring counties that offer domestic partner benefits making it competitive in recruiting and retaining quality employees.

    * These benefits are negligible in cost as attested to by the county's internal auditors.

    * The number of uninsured treated by Jackson Memorial at taxpayer expense will decrease.

    * Provides peace of mind for those employees whose loved ones are not insured.

    * The ordinance would address current workplace equality by providing benefits to all couples, married on unmarried, gay or straight.

Turn up the heat on Senator Nelson (ok and Martinez...as if he'd listen)

An Urgent DAMN Alert

Dear friends,

Today, for the first time, the U.S. House of Representatives voted by 149 votes to 141 against a supplemental war funding bill for the hostile U.S. military occupation of Iraq. The House also voted to begin the withdrawal of occupation forces within 30 days, to complete the withdrawal by the end of 2009, and to require U.S. covert agents to comply with U.S. and international laws that outlaw and criminalize torture.

For the first time, 5 Democratic members from South Florida voted with the majority on each of these measures. That's Hastings, Wexler, Wasserman-Schultz, Meek and Klein. Many Democrats opposed the war funding bill to curry favor with their constituents on the assumption that the Senate will reinstate the funding for the occupation. Many of these same Democrats will then vote for the Senate version, reducing today's vote to a symbolic gesture. Please let your member know that you expect him or her to stand by today's vote.

The Senate is expected to take up the war supplemental next week. Please call Senator Nelson (202-224-5274) and Senator Martinez (202-224-3041) and insist that they vote for the "Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act" exactly as it was passed by the House without an amendment for war funding and without removing the Iraq withdrawal and anti-torture provisions.

And please forward this to your network of friends, relatives and fellow activists!

This is a message from the DAMN (Democratic Action on Martinez and Nelson) Alert system.

Five Years After Mission Accomplished

Today is the Fifth Anniversary of
Mission Accomplished

"[T]he president deserves everything he's doing tonight in terms of his leadership. He won the war. He was an effective commander. Everybody recognizes that, I believe, except a few critics.  ... Here's a president who's really nonverbal. He's like Eisenhower. He looks great in a military uniform."

From True Majority:

Five years ago today, George Bush stood atop the USS Abraham Lincoln and declared "Mission Accomplished in Iraq". Now, the war has entered its sixth year, marked over 4,000 American troop deaths and is expected to cost at least $3 trillion. The Bush Iraq war policy has failed and it's time for Congress to bring this war to an end.

Today, fellow TrueMajority members will be delivering copies of the Responsible Plan to Congress at over 200 events across the country.1 Back up their action with a call to your Representative.

   Call your Representative Right Now

In 1994, the Republicans came up with a Contract with America that they worked to implement as soon as they were sworn in. The contract laid the groundwork for the current disastrous administration. This time around, it will be up to us to make sure that whoever is elected to Congress move briskly to enact the Responsible Plan and bring our troops home.

Here's a suggested script:

I am calling to urge the Representative to support the Responsible Plan to End the War in Iraq. In the next few weeks, I urge the Representative not to give the President another blank check to continue this war, and to sign on as a supporter of the Responsible Plan. The only way to accomplish real national security is to bring our troops home.
